Model Milk, a unique name for a unique restaurant. If you don’t know where the restuarant is located it’s on 17th Ave. All you need to do is look for the big white cow head above the door when yo
u are going by, you can’t miss it.
Walking into the restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised because it’s much larger than I pictured and the decor is brick and beam. They were able to restore some of the original fixturing and it gives the space a feeling of classic mixed with modern. We sat at the wood in front of the kitchen which was neat because we were able to watch the food being prepared, in fact we really didn’t need a menu because every dish that look good we ordered. My friend and I sat down and decided to order a bottle of Gilbert Cellars Syrah which was so smooth and delicious and was a great recommendation - a perfect way to start the night. .
We ordered the calamari to start as it wasn’t breaded and could be made gluten free, plus it looked super fresh. The calamari came in a tomato sauce mixed with bacon and edamame. The flavor was really good, but the calamari was a bit too chewy, even so was a good start to the meal.
I decided to order the steak for my main course and my friend ordered the pork which was cooked with sausage and bacon. When our meals arrived we shared and ironically liked each other’s dish better. The pork was cooked with sausage and bacon which I thought might be overwhelming, but it was so good and my friend summed the dish up perfectly when he said it had “10 layers of flavor”. This was because at first you tasted the pork tenderloin, then the sausage and la
stly the bacon which all melded melded perfectly and created a party in our mouths.
My steak was tender, although a bit on the fatty side, but still had an amazing flavor and best of all both dishes were gluten free.
The kitchen staff was wonderful at ensuring the dishes were either gluten free or could be modified to make sure they were gluten free. Our server was incredibly prompt and actually kept popping up unexpectedly. I joked he was like the Emilio the sneaky, sneaky butler from Mr. Deeds because he kept popping up out of no where. That being said we were very well taken care thoughout the night.
Overall a fabulous evening with delicous food and wine and great company. Check out www.modelmilk.ca.
